Conference 2022: Featured Speaker Dr. Rizsa Albarracin

Dr. Rizsa Albarracin

Medical Scientist and Founder of the Shepherd's Arms Medical Outreach Program

Born to poor and uneducated parents, Dr Rizsa Albarracin grew up in a remote and impoverished village in a tropical jungle in the Philippines. Her childhood years were filled with struggles for survival. Her village lacked basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, medical clinic, and schools. Despite these, she was determined to get an education. In her primary school days, she walked over 10 kilometres everyday through the jungle, often barefoot, to attend a school, which was significantly under-resourced. At the age of 12, she left home to attend high school in a nearby town where she supported herself by working as a maidservant. Her diligence and hard work granted the opportunity to work and study abroad (Australia and New Zealand), while continuing to provide support for her family and the wider community back in the Philippines.

Through sheer determination, faith, courage, and diligence, Rizsa trekked her way out of poverty and now devotes her time to improving the lives of many disadvantaged children and marginalised communities in the Philippines and in other parts of the world, such as India and Africa. She is actively involved in managing the Shepherd’s Arms Children’s Home, a not-for-profit charity that cares for children that are neglected, abused, orphaned, or abandoned in Bohol, Philippines. Over the years, she has also built a small medical clinic, established self-sustainable projects, libraries, scholarship programs, and community support initiatives.

Rizsa currently works for Queensland Health and is also affiliated with the University of Queensland. She also sits on the Management Committee of the Humanitarian Projects International Inc., a not-for-profit charity that exists to bring hope and a future to orphans and other underprivileged people of the world.

RAWCS Tonga Appeal

The effects of the Volcano and Tsunami on January 15th will be far-reaching, impacting the Tonga Community for months, possibly years to come.

Communication remains problematic with international and inter-island call still no possible due to the damage to the undersea cable.

Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) will be working with Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS) and Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa (Tonga) in providing aid and assistance to the affected communities’ and restoring their livelihoods.

RAWCS has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund project to seek financial assistance from Rotary Clubs, the public and private sector.

Donations to the RAWCS Relief Fund are tax deductible.

How to get your news on the district Facebook page
About this e-bulletin
Welcome to the Gist! Rather than send multiple messages per week to club officers in the hope that they will channel your interests and pass on what is important to you, we will be sending one digest email per week using the Clubrunner platform which lists new things in the top section, and reminders of old news in the bottom section. That way, you only need to scan the top half of one email per week to get the Gist, and everyone gets the Gist!

This e-bulletin is published by your District Administrator and Webmaster to let Rotarians and any other subscribers know about what is happening in the district.

Important announcements and event notices will run once only in the "Breaking News" section, and events will continue to be published down below in the "Event Reminders" section until the event has passed.

Clubs are encouraged to send us news of upcoming events that they think members of other clubs might be interested in attending. A good event notice might include some or all of the following. It must be actionable in some way if it is to have an impact.
  • Teaser text (max: 200 words)
  • Follow-on text (optional)
  • An image to catch the eye (could be a flyer image)
  • Information on when, where
  • Contact for the event (must be a Rotarian or Rotaractor within the district)
  • Information on how to register interest if applicable. (A link is best, but an email or phone number is also OK)

Where appropriate, events will also be entered into the district calendar and displayed on the website.

If you are not an active or honorary Rotarian in district 9620, or you would like this to be delivered to a different mailbox from your Rotary primary email address, you can click on the subscribe link below to add an address to the database of recipients.

Please send event info to:  gist@rotary9620.org

We are always interested in hearing your feedback and suggestions on this.
