Subject: URGENT HELP NEEDED AT RARE Importance: High
Good morning all,
Help please!!!
I have copied part of an email from Phil Saxby at RARE. We have a HUGE number of school desks and chairs being delivered over this holiday period, and desperately need help for unloading and storing at RARE. If anyone has another warehouse or shed where more could be stored on a temporary basis, we would also like to know.
…………………………..
Attached and below is the list of school equipment on offer to be dropped off almost every day for the next few weeks during the school holidays.
John and myself have had a good look at the short notice [4pm yesterday afternoon] transport arrangements and also the volume on offer.
The volumes are labelled as cubic metres.
With about 67 cubic metres per 40 foot container the total on offer is 10 x 40 foot containers.
The items are being delivered individually loaded with one driver per truckload, not on any pallets etc.
There is NO WAY that RARE can firstly receive, pack and then store this volume.
However, we do wish to start a relationship with this company who supply the new school furniture, usually during school holidays, then proceed to dump the old furniture.
A future extra shed being constructed and better timing of container loading with more advance notice from this company, would see us being able to take a bit more of this possibly endless source of school equipment being offered.
Can anyone please help at the times listed below – it would be in the afternoon, usually 2-4pm.
I am requesting each of you to see whether the following days sufficient volunteers can be arranged to unload and stack at RARE.
DEFINITE, I think
Wed 18 Sept
Thurs 19 Sept
MAYBE, I hope
Mon 16 Sept
Tues 24 Sept
Please reply whether you would be available on any of these 4 days – bearing in mind that it could be anytime during the afternoon, with minimal notice on each day.
We would probably need to be onsite, ready willing and able from about 2pm each afternoon; as the driver will notify exact time only 30 mins prior to delivery [local Redlands excluded!]
There is certainly extra work available on site, whilst we await a driver’s specific delivery time.
If you think others may be available, also please let me know days and numbers.
I need to respond the company by later this morning - especially for next Monday afternoon, if it is possible.
………………………………………….
Members of The Mighty Club – if you can help, please let me know asap, particularly if you can help on Monday afternoon.
We have a Wish list from 13 schools in Bougainville all requiring desks and chairs – so these will also be put to good use over the next few weeks/months.

Today, we stand on the brink of a monumental achievement in public health: the eradication of polio. This devastating illness primarily affects children, leading to paralysis and, in some cases, death. By eradicating polio, we can prevent untold suffering and ensure that no child will ever again experience the debilitating effects of this disease.
The eradication of polio is a testament to the power of global cooperation. Countries, organizations, and individuals from all walks of life have come together with a common purpose, showing us what we can achieve when united by a shared goal. We have a moral imperative to finish the job. The tools, knowledge, and resources to eradicate polio are within our grasp. To stop short of complete eradication would be to abandon the progress we have made and to condemn future generations to the threat of resurgence.
The final push to eradicate polio is not just a health initiative; it is a symbol of what humanity can achieve together. It represents hope, resilience, and our collective commitment to a better world. Let us all do our part to ensure that polio becomes a disease of the past, remembered only in the history books.
For the coming year, we challenge our clubs to increase their financial commitment to the Polio Plus fund. We encourage Rotary members and others to pledge at least A$100 per year to the PolioPlus Fund until polio is eradicated from the face of the earth.
John’s partner project for the coming year will be the support of End Polio, ensuring that we can place this disease into the history books forever. Consider the magic in our mission to eradicate polio. Decades ago, this seemed like an impossible dream. Yet, through unwavering dedication, strategic partnerships, and the relentless efforts of Rotarians worldwide, we are on the brink of making history. This is not just magic—it is the power of Rotary in action.

I would like to pay my deep respects to the Rotary Club of Archerfield, of which I am an honorary member, for their very successful annual dinner and charity night at Gambaro's. This is an absolute institution. They raised funds on the night for a wonderful charity called Interplast. During my time as company secretary of a great Queensland company called PanAust Ltd, we worked very closely with Interplast, who assist in facial reconstructions, especially for children in need of those treatments in developing countries. We assisted that charity in Laos and also in PNG. So I'm very familiar with the work of Interplast.
There was a considerable amount of money—tens of thousands of dollars—raised on Saturday night by Archerfield Rotary for the charity. That will go to providing treatment in the Asia-Pacific region, which is a wonderful thing. Special thanks to Lester Drew and Ray Deen, both dear friends of mine, for their work in bringing the event together. To all the attendees of the event: thank you so much for your contribution to what was just a wonderful evening. Thank you to Archerfield Rotary and the broader Archerfield Rotary community for everything that you do for the community.

Welcome to the Gist! Rather than send multiple messages per week to club officers in the hope that they will channel your interests and pass on what is important to you, we will be sending one digest email per week using the Clubrunner platform which lists new things in the top section, and reminders of old news in the bottom section. That way, you only need to scan the top half of one email per week to get the Gist, and everyone gets the Gist!
This e-bulletin is published by your District Administrator and Webmaster to let Rotarians and any other subscribers know about what is happening in the district. The GIST is for time-sensitive brief stories sponsored by the District, a Rotary club, or a Rotary RAG or Fellowship.
District Announcements
Club event announcements
RAG and Fellowship event announcements
Event notices will run once only in the "Breaking News" section, and events will continue to be published down below in the "Event Reminders" section until the event has passed.
Articles that report on past events and projects, anything of enduring significance, and anything else that does not fit the GIST publishing guidelines should be sent to the District Newsletter editor at newsletter@rotary9620.org.
How to get an Event in the Calendar
To get an event in the Calendar, please send the following information to gist@rotary9620.org:
Mandatory: The text that you would like to appear in the calendar entry. Should include a teaser as to why someone would like to attend the event, ticket prices, etc etc. The text cannot include potentially sensitive information like email addresses, phone numbers and bank account details. If you wish to communicate these, put them in an image or PDF file that can be linked as a download document.
Mandatory: Date, Time, Location. Please include the postcode in the location as this is needed to generate the location map. (Or the event could be online of course.)
Mandatory: Name of a Rotarian in the district who is the primary contact for the event.
Strongly recommended: An image to go in the calendar entry detail page. Landscape format works best.
Optional: Documents about the event like event flyers, etc etc. Max size: 5MB
Optional: Links that might be useful like bookings links, the home page of the charity you are supporting, etc.
How to get an event notice in the GIST
The GIST is published on Sunday. The deadline to get an event notice in every Sunday's GIST is midnight Friday. Requests coming in after Saturday morning will be handled on a "best effort" basis. To get an event entry in the GIST, please do the following:
Mandatory: Get the event in the Calendar (see above)
Mandatory: An image in square or landscape format to be the article. If you send an image that is in portrait format, it will be cropped to square according to the GIST editor's judgement. It's OK to send a PDF Flyer - the editor will just do a screenshot and use that.
Optional: SHORT explanatory text which will go under the image. 200 words max. Long explanations should go in the calendar entry.
